Personally, I'm not sure they had much in the way of plans. They're in development. The plan is someone try this or that, anyone got any ideas on how to improve performance, etc.
In a large company, his role may be what you say, but in a small company, everyone works and wears multiple hats. I find it hard to believe he wasn't in the lab most of his time.
