What I'm talking about would not be obvious to a "visitor".
Maine is a beautiful state but not a wealthy one.Lobstermen, fishermen, laborers etc.many of whom are "Out of work" during the winter. The state and local wellfare (towns) get stretched to the breaking point because there are those who come here and use the system in the warmer months and then the "Snow crowd" in the winter. You would (or maybe not)be surprised at how the college kids use the food stamp program and get away with it.What do people expect when a working mother has to walk or drive a "beater" to her 2 part time jobs making $7-8/hour and she is watching others with fancy clothes driving Escalades using food stamps .Is she a bigot or "biased"? I don't think so.I also don't agree with all the money it costs to hire translators at DHS .People who come here need to learn the language and "assimilate"into society. Not the other way around.Wellfare should be a temporary lift up not a permanent hand out.
