Colin Kaepernick has faced criticism for kneeling during the national anthem, but if he tried to pull that in India, he would face jail time.
Over the last two days, police in India arrested 12 moviegoers accused of failing to stand for the national anthem, which the country's Supreme Court recently mandated must be played before film screenings.
The court said the rule was aimed at instilling a sense of patriotism.
The 12 people, all Indian citizens, were arrested in two separate incidents in the cities of Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram. They were released on bail.
The New York Times reported that the arrests were the first known efforts by the police to enforce compliance with the Supreme Court ruling.
