WASHINGTON — The FBI’s investigation into Hillary Rodham Clinton’s server has extended to a second computer data company to recover her deleted emails.
Datto Inc., of Norwalk, Conn., was hired in 2013 to provide a private “cloud” backup of Clinton’s personal server and now is cooperating with the FBI to turn over any remaining data.
Datto said in a statement that “with the consent of our client and their end user, and consistent with our policies regarding data privacy [on Tuesday], Datto delivered to the FBI a hardware device containing all backed-up data [related to Clinton].”
The company that maintained Clinton’s personal email operation, Platte River Networks in Denver, already turned over its server to the FBI.
The existence of Datto’s work with Clinton and the possibility of recovering cloud data was revealed by Sen. Ron Johnson. The Wisconsin Republican sent a letter to Datto’s CEO this week inquiring about their handling of Clinton’s data.
The letter also revealed concerns Platte River had over Clinton’s request to limit the amount of data that was being backed up. One employee worried in a company email that Platte River could be involved in a coverup of some “shady s–t.”
The Clinton campaign accused Johnson of “ripping a page from the House Benghazi Committee’s playbook and mounting his own, taxpayer-funded sham of an investigation with the sole purpose of attacking Hillary Clinton politically.”
“The Justice Department’s independent review is led by nonpolitical, career professionals, and Ron Johnson has no business interfering with it for his own partisan ends,” campaign spokesman Brian Fallon said.
He didn’t explain why the Clinton team asked for limits on data backups.
Johnson chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee that has been inquiring about Clinton’s use of a personal email server.
