As Race Gets Tighter, CNN Moves 2 States Out Of The ‘Blue’ Column
"We're seeing some definite trending ..."

In response to the changing trends among American voters, CNN has moved two states it prematurely painted blue back to “battleground” status.

On Thursday, CNN moved Florida and Nevada out of the “leaning Democratic” column in response to new polls that showed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump gaining in each state. A Bloomberg poll in Florida showed Trump leading there. An NBC poll showed Nevada as a dead heat.

Utah, Arizona, Ohio and North Carolina are the other states CNN lists as battlegrounds.

“We’re seeing some definite trending in tightening up this race,” pollster John Zogby said, who said that as Florida goes, the nation may follow.

“Demographically, it’s not a microcosm but vote-wise it is. When we’ve had very, very close presidential elections, we’ve had very, very close Florida elections. It’s as good a state as any to watch as a barometric reading.”

Zogby said the next state to show if the Trump trend continues will be Ohio.

In Ohio, a poll by Remington Research found that with all candidates factored in, Trump came out ahead of Clinton 46 percent to 42 percent. Among non-aligned voters, Trump led Clinton 41 percent to 37 percent in the Ohio poll.

The way CNN parses out the electoral votes, states that are either leaning or solidly Democratic total 272 electoral votes. Those leaning or solidly Republican total 179, with 87 in the battleground states. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes for victory.

Recent polling has shown a common thread — independent voters lining up behind Trump.

A national Fox News poll on Wednesday found that Trump leads Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton among independent voters 41 percent to 28 percent. Trump, who was deadlocked with Clinton among independents two weeks ago, led by seven points last week.

“This race may come down to the independent vote. Right now, they tilt for Trump,” pollster J. Ann Selzer said in analyzing the Florida Bloomberg results, in which Trump had a seven-point lead over Clinton among independent voters.

A new Texas poll showed the clout of those independent voters.

A University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll released Thursday showed Trump leading Clinton among likely Texas voters, 45 percent to 42 percent.

However, among independent voters, 46 supported Trump and only 19 percent supported Clinton.
