This was an open label trial without a control group as is the case in almost all phase 1/2 trials . Results were compared to an algorithm (the Wheler system) developed by M.D. Anderson in 2012 that uses risk factors to predict survival of any individual patient based on certain risk factors. These can then be used to compare predicted life expectancy for each patient against the actual survival time.
