Was there about two years ago; played Carnoustie, Royal Dornach (Tom Watson's favorite links course), St Andrews, Kingsbarn (my favorite), Cruden Bay, Royal Aberdeen, Bairn, and Muirfield (got to eat in the clubhouse- coat and tie required) Check how many of those make the World's top 100 courses!
Teed off St Andrews at 5:30 pm or so and finished around 10 pm. Couldn't see the course the first 9 the fog was so bad and then it lifted and the back nine was SPECTACULAR. Road hole everything it is cracked up to be. Forget about the greens being double sized, they are more like 4 times or more the size of a normal USA green. The gorse will kill you as will the pot bunkers; gorse was used as a defense in olden times as it is inpenetrable. Best of all, went with a group of my buddies which made it special. Trips and friends like that are what life is all about. Cannot say enough good things about all the courses, not one was a disappointment.
Will make a trip back with my wife but probably just to visit the very small towns on the west side of Scotland and some in the inner Highlands. Absolutely loved the country. Hope to be able to stay there about a month. CTIX will provide the funds for the trip (my prayer to God's ear).
Kelt will be shocked at how small most of the distilleries are over there.
