That's a sweeping generalization that overlooks too many exceptions, including improvements in health, safety and access to education SINCE the golden era you claim existed.
Additionally there are large numbers of women and blacks who would disagree with you because of restricted opportunities that existed in the workplace.
De jure and De facto segregation also made for lives that were NOT 'better' for those suffering the discrimination.
Just because some things don't make sense to you doesn't meant they don't make sense.
