What if let's say a MM who has a parent company that may have affiliations with investment and banking came on some hard times, like they where hit with a hefty fine for lets say lying to the government... Well that MM doesn't really care about any company he just knows which tickers he can move really easy with low volume. The answer comes across and a certain trash lawyer owes a favor or something and says yeah we can help you here. Nobody will be able to connect the dots. They thought it would be easy to crash and burn this one based on the position of the company(and some of their insiders form a know shorting message board) being at least a year out from any big trial announcement. So the MM lets the price move up as it is easily done on low volume just add fake volume buying and selling. When it is ripe for the picking and you have your bashers in place bam... you lay out with one solid cheap shot from behind. You try real hard to cripple the company but they got mad and have a lot of fight in them because they actually believe in what they are doing and what they have! Your time is almost up and it didn't quite work but now would be a bad time to get sloppy. So you start tying up loose ends pulling out and just making it look like a simple short attack because you are going to leave some innocent folks on the short end of the short stick holding a short position, you just need to be clean and sure that no one that has enough details is going to be upset when you pull the plug....

Or it is just bad luck, either way one solid announcement and this is all behind us!
