UltraFlix also offers users with 100Mbps connections streaming quality identical to the new Ultra HD Blu-ray specifications -- another innovation first by NanoTech.
Another big leap in technology that should start to make its presence felt next year is gigabit Internet. All the big Internet providers, including Comcast and AT&T, plan to roll out systems in major metropolitan areas capable of delivering speeds up to 1 gigabit per second. That’s over 300 times faster than today’s average speed of around 25 megabits per second.
Now nobody needs that sort of speed bump yet. Even 4K TV works well with 25 mbps. But when the aforementioned virtual reality goes mainstream, it will require massive bandwidth — especially for immersive experiences and complex holograms.
The final development for 2016 I’d like to mention involves technology, but really is about marketing. Cord cutting by TV viewers gained steam this year, with the advent of mainstream programming available over the Internet, including “skinny” bundles like Dish Network’s Sling TV and stand-alone offerings from CBS and HBO. That trend will continue in 2016, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see the networks begin to offer live sports on an ad hoc, pay-per-view basis. If that happens — and games or game-packages are inexpensive enough — then it will be game over for traditional cable and satellite packages.
