Ultra HD panel penetration hits 16 pct in April: data

Ultra HD (UHD) panels accounted for about 16 percent of the overall panel shipments by the world's top six panel makers in April, data showed Tuesday, with South Korea's Samsung Display Co. and LG Display Co. leading the overall growth in the segment.
The combined shipment of UHD panels by the six players came to 3.1 million units last month, while their overall sales of panels rose 5.4 percent on-year to reach 19.68 million units, according to the data compiled by market tracker WitsView, a division of TrendForce.
Samsung Display held the highest portion of UHD panels in its sales at 25 percent, trailed by LG Display with 15 percent. Taiwan-based AU Optronics and Innolux Corp. also held comparable figures of 15 percent each.
"WitsView's analysis indicates that since the start of 2015, international TV brands have shifted their focus to innovative and high-margin products with value-added features," it said. "Consequently, large-size and UHD TVs are given more importance in their strategies."
The data also showed 55-inch models took up 35 percent of the combined UHD panel sales for April, trailed by 49-inch panels with 34.5 percent. The 48- and 65-inch models held 20.8 percent and 5 percent, respectively.
