Also although not really what this site is for, any tips on dealing with?
1. If listening in person, start looking elsewhere, focusing your attention on something else. But first check your watch, and note the time. The game you're playing is to see how long the person continues to ramble on when there has been no eye contact and no visual confirmation or acknowledgement of their banter with nods or winks (only if Dave is the speaker). If they stop their banter long enough to ask you a question, always respond with "I'm not sure, what do you think?". Then check your watch again and begin round 2 of the game. Repeat until you get bored, then simply remark "Sorry, I have an appointment", pointing to your watch, and wave goodbye as you walk away. If they start to follow, pick up the pace. If they continue to gain on you, break out into a full run.
2. If listening to audio, reduce volume to zero for a few minutes. Sing or hum a happy song to yourself. Even if you can't carry a tune, it's better than the alternative. If you haven't had a bowel movement, this might be a good time for one. Turning the volume back up might help with this process.
3. Another option is to continue listening for entertainment purposes, counting the number of various "errr"s, "uhmmm"s and "ahhh"s. For fun, compare your count with other listeners. Post your counts on the message boards. Further analyze the response by calculating number of verbal pauses per minute, compare number of pauses in one question to the next, etc. To make the game more challenging, select playback at 2x, 4x or 8x and try to count the verbal anomalies. Does your accuracy improve because you're not bored to death waiting for the next segment after each pause?
