Grupo Televisa: A Good Time To Look South For Oppo
Post# of 17650
To say Televisa is the market leader in Mexico's entertainment sector is an understatement. The company's television networks and stations (over-the-air and cable and satellite) capture an estimated 69% share of the 37 billion peso (2.4bn in US$) Mexican television advertising market versus primary competitor TV Azteca. In addition, the company has been aggressively building its media distribution business through the purchase and build-out of cable/broadband franchises and owns 59% of Sky (DirecTV owns the remainder) which is Mexico's leading satellite TV provider (and covers much of Central America as well). If you combined CBS (NYSE:CBS), Time Warner (NYSE:TWX), Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) (NASDAQ:CMCSK) and DirecTV (NASDAQ TV) in the United States you might get a sense of how vertically integrated and important Televisa is in the media business of Mexico (with global leadership in Spanish-language programming including #1 in the United States through its holdings in and programming licensing agreement with Univision)......
(Note that if AT&T is successful in acquiring DirecTV, T would become a 41% partner with Televisa in Sky.)
