You are completely over analyzing this. Recombinant MANF is still a plausible option. Urano is working on another option knowing that the recombinant MANF injections already have a good chance of working. The small molecules he's working with may end up being better but they also may not work out at all. Just because he's working with small molecules now doesn't mean recombinant MANF doesn't work.
