Dr. Björklund is a Professor of Histology at Lund University, Sweden and also served as the Chairman of the Neuroscience Panel for the European Research Council from 2007-2010.
Anders Björklund received his MD/PhD from Lund University in Sweden in 1969 and has spent his entire academic career at this institution. He was appointed Professor of Histology in 1983 and has been Section Chief at the Wallenberg Neuroscience Center since 1996. He served as President of the European Neuroscience Association from 1996-1998, was a member of the Wellcome Trust Neuroscience Panel in London 2002-2005, and served as Chairman of the Neuroscience panel at the European Research Council in Brussels from 2007-2010. He was elected Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1969 and Foreign Member of the National Academy of Sciences, USA in 2011.
Dr. Björklund has published over 500 scientific papers in the field of neuroanatomy, neuronal regeneration, disease modeling, cell transplantation, gene transfer and repair in the central nervous system. His main research interests are brain regeneration and repair, with a focus on cell replacement and gene therapy in neurodegenerative diseases. Over the last decade, Dr. Björklund’s team at Lund University has pioneered the use of cell transplantation in Parkinson´s disease, and played an active role in the exploration of stem cells as a source of cells to be used for this purpose.
He was also involved with the Phase 2A trial of Eltoprazine.
