On April 2nd, 2013, U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled the “BRAIN” Initiative, which is short for Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies.
“The BRAIN Initiative sends a signal that this is an area that we need to be invested in, because if we don’t we’re going to pay for it one way or another,” said Gerald E. Commissiong, CEO of Amarantus Bioscience (AMBS) in an interview with OneMedPlace. Amarantus is currently undergoing preclinical testing for its headlining MANF therapy, designed to address Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Traumatic Brain Injuries.
Commissiong went on to describe his view of the role that the initial infusion of funding will take, saying “More likely than not this will be more of a catalyst than in and of itself an important investment.”
His view may also be tempered by the fact that Amarantus’s MANF therapy was once developed at the NIH, and Amarantus’ CSO ran a division of the NIH. Amarantus may be an interesting case study in spinning out successful technologies into the private sector.

Amarantus and Brewer Sports Announce #C4CT Summit Morning Keynote Presentation by Congressman Chaka Fattah
"It is an honor to take part in next month's Summit and help advance America's commitment to brain research, especially as it relates to traumatic brain injury (TBI). The Fattah Neuroscience Initiative is working to leverage the resources within government, while fostering collaborations and cooperation with partners around the globe, to expand our neuroscience capabilities as we seek cures and treatments for Alzheimer's and other brain disease," Congressman Fattah said. "The #C4CT Summit will be a unique opportunity for stakeholders to engage in a necessary dialogue on how to better understand and address the long-term impacts of TBI." - See more at: http://globenewswire.com/news-release/2014/06...07cMW.dpuf
BRAIN Initiative
President Obama is making new investments in the “BRAIN” Initiative — a bold new research effort to revolutionize our understanding of the human mind and uncover new ways to treat, prevent, and cure brain disorders like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury.

Brain Research through Advancing Innovative NeurotechnologiesSM (BRAIN)
WHAT IS THE BRAIN INITIATIVE?
The Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative is part of a new Presidential focus aimed at revolutionizing our understanding of the human brain. By accelerating the development and application of innovative technologies, researchers will be able to produce a revolutionary new dynamic picture of the brain that, for the first time, shows how individual cells and complex neural circuits interact in both time and space. Long desired by researchers seeking new ways to treat, cure, and even prevent brain disorders, this picture will fill major gaps in our current knowledge and provide unprecedented opportunities for exploring exactly how the brain enables the human body to record, process, utilize, store, and retrieve vast quantities of information, all at the speed of thought.

Accelerating Medicines Partnership
The Accelerating Medicines Partnership (AMP) is a bold new venture between the NIH, 10 biopharmaceutical companies and several non-profit organizations to transform the current model for developing new diagnostics and treatments by jointly identifying and validating promising biological targets of disease. The ultimate goal is to increase the number of new diagnostics and therapies for patients and reduce the time and cost of developing them.
AMP will begin with three to five year pilot projects in three disease areas:
Alzheimer’s disease

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), 10 biopharmaceutical companies, and several non-profit organizations have designed an unprecedented new partnership. Managed through the Foundation for the NIH (FNIH), the Accelerating Medicines Partnership (AMP) brings high-level government, industry, and non-profit organization partners together to identify and validate the most promising biological targets of disease for new diagnostic and drug development. The partners have designed a bold milestone-driven research plan to tackle this challenge for Alzheimer’s disease, as well as for type 2 diabetes and the autoimmune disorders of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). Importantly, the AMP data and analyses will be made publicly available to the broad biomedical community. This fact sheet addresses the AMP research plan for Alzheimer’s disease.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2015
"As the architect of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, I am incredibly pleased that the FY 2016 budget includes funding for brain research programs in the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and the Department of Defense. Additionally, it further invests in the BRAIN Initiative , a cross-agency effort I am proud to partner with on efforts to advance our global fight against brain disease.
