"Dr. Urano,
Hope all is well. It is obvious that finding a cure for Wolframs and Type 1 Diabetes is not YET within ANYONE'S grasp. Please help me understand your latest blog. To replace the damaged tissues, you are going to use stem cells, correct? What will prevent those stem cells from being damaged AGAIN? Also, to protect the "remaining cells from cell death" you will use trophic factors. I know that MANF will protect the remaining tissues from cell death, however, how will MANF be able to prevent the replaced tissues from being damaged again?
P.S. May God's hand guide you and your team in finding this illusive cure - you can do it! My family HAS, continues to HAVE, and will ALWAYS believe in you. You are the chosen one.

"To The Pais Family,
I've realized I can use internet in the airplane. Thank you for your kind words. Here are my answers.
1. We may need to genetically modified stem cells from patients. In Type 1 diabetes, we know the immunogenic parts of insulin. By replacing the immunogenic part with less immnogenic part, we may be able to prevent the death of new beta cells derived from stem cells.
2. It seems like MANF has two effects, proliferation of remaining tissues and protection of remaining tissues from cell death by modulating the function of cell survival enzyme. We may be able to activate this specific cell survival enzyme by a drug.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Take care,
Fumi"
P.S. No matter what the approach is, it seems as if MANF will be used in some shape or form. I have a feeling AMBS is about to "Rock the House"!
