Horiyoshi The Thiiird: All The Tattoo Pleasure, None Of The Tattoo Pain
December 4, 2012 3:16 pm
Not everyone has the needle tolerance to endure a full body tattoo by legendary irezumi master Horiyoshi III. However, the famed artist’s clothing line Horiyoshi The Thiiird, launched in 2009 and based in London, gives us more cowardly fans a chance to wear all the ink with none of the pain.
For Spring, the label’s women’s range pulled inspiration from the master’s work as well as Horiyoshi’s own back tattoo, which was designed by his mentor. The result is a combination of vibrant phoenix, “moon bat,” snake, and cloud prints that complement feminine knits and cover delicate scarves, fluid silk frocks, and sweet puff skirts.
To showcase its warm-weather looks, the brand teamed up with director Dominic Dorin to create an intimate Spring film. Providing a Zen-like view of the lookbook shoot, the short focuses on the clothing while revealing the behind-the-scenes dance between model and photographer. As for the relationship between tattoos and fashion, the brand’s women’s creative director, Dawn Green, offers, “In Japanese tradition, a tattoo should be for oneself and have meaning. Clothing,” she adds, “should be the same. It’s an expression of you.”
