Failed Banks - 2012
As of Nov. 16, 50 banks have failed and been taken over by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. In most cases, deposits and some of the assets have been transferred to acquiring banks. The acquiring bank assumes the bank's deposits and, usually, some of the assets. In most cases, the FDIC acquires some of the assets -- normally the troubled loans. The FDIC estimates that the failures in 2012 have cost $2.5 billion.

A graphic look at the state of American banking
Over the past three years, the banking industry has continued to reel from the mortgage meltdown and the recession. Today, there are 11 percent fewer banks than at the end of 2007; more than 300 banks have failed since Jan. 1, 2009. Problem loans and foreclosures continue to plague the industry, with troubled assets nearly tripling since the end of 2007. In a sign of slow improvement, troubled assets fell in the fourth quarter of last year, but the number of banks on the FDIC's troubled list continues to grow and is at two-decade high. More
