You have no idea how many tourists break their neck at Sandy Beach in Oahu. I also have boogie boarded there and it is extremely dangerous. I was in my 20s when I did that. I nearly drowned at Macapu Beach a little ways down from Sandy. I got caught in a rip tide there and barely made it back. I was an idiot in those days. I went out with a boogie board that didn't have a strap, and I had no fins. It took me 20 minutes battling the waves to get out to the big sets I wanted to ride. On my first wave I lost my board. I was 70 or 80 yards out. 10 foot wave after 10 foot wave thrashed me down and tumbled me. I wasn't able to make any progress swimming back to the beach. I was exhausted! Instinctively, I started swimming parallel to the beach and was able to get out of the rip tide and make it back to the beach. But barely!
My wife was sunbathing on the beach and had no idea how close she came to becoming a widow! Hawaii doesn't publicize how many tourists drowned each year being idiots. It's a dangerous place.
I love Laguna Beach. I don't boogie board any more I just play in the waves like an old pussy.
