Man, I don't think I'd survive on the East Coast!

Southern Californians aren't all superficial twits! You get a few more of those in Hollywood, but not as many here in Orange County. John Wayne lived in Orange County, in Newport Beach. I have a story about him.
My wife and I were sitting in a spa with this older guy when we first moved down here several years ago. This guy in his 70s was in impeccable shape. Well, he used to take care of John Wayne's yacht many years ago. He actually got to be close friends with him. He told us how John Wayne attended USC on a Football scholarship. (He was truly a big strong guy!) The Football coach made it very clear that the players were not to participate in other sports or engage in activities where they could get injured, or their scholarship would be taken away. Well, John Wayne liked to body surf and there is a spot in Newport called "The Wedge" where the waves bounce of the jetty and literally double in size. When the surf gets waves in the 6 to 10 foot range along the coast down here, I'll go to the wedge and watch the real daring surfers because those waves will get 20 to 30 feet high. I kid you not! So, apparently, John Wayne was out body surfing in those waves and got hurt. When the coach found out how it happened, he lost his scholarship. In order to pay his tuition he had to look for a job, so he went to Hollywood to be an extra on a movie set. And that's how John Wayne got his start in Hollywood! True story.
He owned a home nearby "The Wedge" for the remainder of his life. And the Airport here in Newport Beach bears his name: John Wayne Airport.
Yeah, we don't have people here who when you have a heart attack will pick you pockets. LOL. That's scary.
