Issues and Concerns with Potential Sale of Richfield Landfill
Protecting the Holloway Watershed and Flint River
Why would Richfield Township Enter into a Host Agreement with TerRenova without protecting themselves from unknown and potentially damaging future activities?
Where are the detailed plans from TerRenova for landfill mining or their gasification plant?
Why can't TerRenova come back for Township approval if and when they have detailed plans that protect our community, air, water and natural resources?
Why is TerRenova so secretive about its plans for the landfill site? Where is their waste going to come from?
MDEQ should not be entertaining any proposal to open up areas of the landfill without full disclosure and an opportunity for the local community and public to be heard - what opportunities will there be for public input?
The Richfield Landfill has a history of environmental challenges that have been addressed by the MDEQ and the prior consent order; why should TerRenova be allowed to interfere with the remediation work that has been accomplished to date?
What experience does TerRenova have with operating a landfill, large-scale mining operations, materials recovery facilities or waste to energy plants?
What studies has TerRenvoa done to determine the viability of mining recyclables at this landfill?
What exactly is TerRenova planning in terms of a waste to energy facility?
Most of the landfill is capped and this will open up a "Pandora's box" of environmental challenges that threaten the well-being of the community. According to the former owners, opeing up the closed position will be disasterous to leachate levels, containment as well as structural integrity of the adjoing portions of the landfill.
Does TerRenova have the financial resources to risk opening this landfill again?
What additional financial assurance will be provided if mining is allowed?
Who will pay to close and maintain the landfill if TerRenova fails.?
If landfill mining is so lucrative, why don't all the major landfill companies mine their landfills?
Why can't Richfield Township say NO to mining, gasification or incineration until detailed plans with adequate protections are submitted for review and consideration to the Township?
