EvaluatePharma estimates $84 billion annual market in oncologic drugs globally, rising to $100 billion in 2018 (Lucintel report). Americans now spend nearly $30 billion per year for these Big Pharma cancer treatment drugs. The US market for oncologics, with its large aging population, is predicted to rise to $50 billion in 2015 (Pharma Letter). The FDA has rolled out the red carpet for Big Pharma with its recent reorganization establishing the Division of Oncology Products.
The efficacy of cannabinoids in fighting cancer threatens Big Pharma's expanding and extremely lucrative stronghold in this area of medicine.
The human body has built-in endocannabinoid receptors that are involved in the immune function. "CB2 receptors are almost exclusively found in the immune system, with the greatest density in the spleen." Cannabis works with the body in fighting disease, not against it.

Before the 1980s, it was often speculated that cannabinoids produced their physiological and behavioral effects via nonspecific interaction with cell membranes, instead of interacting with specific membrane-bound receptors.

Thus, there is not a risk of respiratory or cardiovascular failure as there is with many other drugs. CB1 receptors appear to be responsible for the euphoric and anticonvulsive effects of cannabis.

While found only in the peripheral nervous system, a report does indicate that CB2 is expressed by a subpopulation of microglia in the human cerebellum.
