OutSystems Partners to Enhance Cancer Awareness in Communities
OutSystems Collaborates for Cancer Awareness
OutSystems, a global leader in software innovation, has joined forces with Nelson Mandela University to enhance cancer awareness among rural communities in South Africa. Through this partnership, the Centre for Community Technologies (CCT) aims to address the vital need for information and support in regions where cancer awareness is alarmingly low.
The Challenge in Rural Communities
Many communities in the Eastern Cape face significant challenges related to cancer awareness, stigmatization, and accessing medical care. The lack of understanding about cancer symptoms, treatments, and emotional implications has created barriers for individuals seeking help. To combat this critical issue, the CCT has taken a proactive approach to educate and empower citizens.
Introducing the C-VIVE Mobile App
The C-VIVE mobile app was born out of a desire to provide crucial information about cancer. Designed collaboratively with NTT Data and the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), this app aims to inform users about symptoms and lifestyle changes while encouraging earlier medical intervention. It emerged from OutSystems' Build for the Future hackathon and offers a wealth of resources for those impacted by cancer.
Key Features of C-VIVE
C-VIVE stands out for its user-friendly design and comprehensive functionalities:
- The app employs easy-to-understand content, utilizing neutral colors and animations that replace lengthy texts, complemented by text-to-speech options.
- It includes a fully functional offline mode, allowing users to access vital information without relying on Wi-Fi.
- Gamification elements engage users by tracking their learning and adaptation through the app.
- C-VIVE supports multiple languages, including Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans, and English, fostering inclusivity.
Positive Community Impact
Feedback from the community indicates that C-VIVE has resonated well with users. Professor Darelle van Greunen emphasized the importance of delivering cancer-related information in a non-intimidating and approachable manner. As awareness grows, the app is instrumental in reducing stigma.
CCT's Growth and Future Plans
Initially starting with just three employees, the CCT has expanded to 28 full-time staff, including developers. The center is currently working to adapt C-VIVE for iOS users, expanding its reach to a broader audience. Plans are also underway to create a web application and add more languages, making sure vital cancer information is accessible to as many people as possible.
