New Research Advances Veteran Mental Health Care Insights
Exploring New Insights into Veteran Mental Health Care
Committed to supporting the mental health of veterans and military communities, Cohen Veterans Network (CVN) has recently unveiled significant research findings that contribute to understanding and enhancing suicide prevention strategies. This national not-for-profit organization emphasizes the importance of mental well-being for post-9/11 veterans, service members, and their families.
Importance of Strong Therapeutic Relationships
This research includes qualitative interviews aimed at understanding client experiences with suicide risk management. A core finding was the importance of establishing trust between clients and their therapists, which helps create a safe environment. This environment encourages clients to share their thoughts and feelings regarding suicidal impulses, forming a crucial part of their therapeutic journey.
Collaborative Approaches in Therapy
Despite initial hesitations, clients reported that implementing safety planning and standardized measures positively impacted their treatment, especially when these strategies were collaboratively developed with their therapists. Furthermore, in-session skill-building practices helped clients start making positive changes in their mental health.
Predicting Suicide Risk Factors
In addition to qualitative research, CVN also analyzed electronic health records to identify key predictors of suicide risk among veterans and active-duty clients. The study highlighted strong correlations between conditions like depression and PTSD with elevated suicide risk.
The Impact of Trauma and Social Factors
A range of trauma exposures, including adverse childhood experiences and military sexual trauma, further exacerbated the risk. Notably, social drivers of health—such as housing and employment insecurity, along with insufficient social support—also played a significant role in increasing suicide risk.
Addressing Mental Health Holistically
These findings point to an urgent need for holistic support systems that consider mental health, psychological trauma, and the social environments surrounding veterans and active-duty service members. Dr. David Linkh, Director of CVN-IQ, stressed the importance of adopting comprehensive strategies tailored to meet the unique experiences of these populations.
To gain further insight into the social drivers of risk, researchers examined the challenges faced by minoritized clients at CVN clinics. This part of the study revealed how effective case management can alleviate the adverse impacts of social challenges by connecting clients with essential resources.
Collaboration in Suicide Prevention
Justin Schmitt, the AVP of Corporate Responsibility at USAA, emphasized that suicide prevention is a shared commitment. He expressed strong support for collaborative efforts to find impactful solutions aimed at reducing suicide amongst veterans and service members.
Cohen Veterans Network’s Commitment to Care
CVN has been a cornerstone in the realm of veteran mental health care since its inception in 2016. With nearly 75,000 clients served and over 635,000 clinical sessions completed, the network addresses various mental health issues, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and more. CVN also offers extensive case management services to help clients navigate social challenges like unemployment and financial stress.
Accessibility of Services
The network operates through its 22 Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics across 20 states, providing both in-person and telehealth services for those in need. This accessibility ensures that veterans can receive the support they require, no matter where they are located.
