New Jersey Credit Unions Unite to Combat Hunger Crisis
New Jersey Credit Unions Join Forces to Tackle Hunger
BASKING RIDGE, N.J. — In a remarkable show of unity, First Harvest Credit Union, Affinity Federal Credit Union, and EdiFi Credit Union, have launched the New Jersey Credit Unions Food Cooperative. This initiative has engaged 27 credit unions across the state to address a pressing issue: the growing hunger crisis in New Jersey. With the cooperation of these institutions, residents can now easily donate food items at various branches, significantly aiding local food pantries and organizations.
The Food Insecurity Challenge in New Jersey
As reported by state authorities, New Jersey faced an increase in the food insecurity rate from 8.7% in the previous years to 10.7% recently. Amongst those affected, children are particularly vulnerable, with a food insecurity rate of 13.2%. Moreover, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority has highlighted that the top food desert communities in the state, comprised of approximately 1.5 million individuals, often lack access to affordable, healthy food options. Many of these communities are located within the areas served by the participating credit unions.
How to Contribute to the Initiative
For those who wish to contribute, residents and members of participating credit unions can find their nearest branch listed as a collection point. The branches will directly support a food pantry or organization, enabling donations of non-perishable food items. Every contribution helps to alleviate hunger in the respective communities.
