Musk doesn't come up with his own ideas, he appropriates those of others. He's got where he's at because he's a pitch man. He was able to convince Paypal that X was a threat to them than got a deal. He became CEO then got booted because they realized he was a loose cannon that didn't know what he was doing. He got into Tesla because he had contacts that could provide funding then pushed the original leaders out. The only stable company he has is Space X and that's only because he has government contracts.
