Representation in making a deal comes after proposing and negotiating, especially if it is more complex, such as licensing for a particular indication, or for a specific country or region. I would not ask my lawyer to solicit offers, nor negotiate the broad outlines of a deal, but once a deal is agreed to in principle, they would make sure I was covered and protected to the greatest extent possible.
