Whatever you may know about film production does not apply in this case.
DIRECT control -- what's more direct than a CEO saying "I'll investigate it, you clearly own the data" and then slow-walking and then refusing to release the data? What's more direct than having officers of the bigger company also having those officers in charge of the subsidiary?
There's a difference between a film studio letting an LLC run a production, and having the president of the film studio and several of the other officers ACTUALLY RUNNING the LLC.
