Well of course there will be new variants. It could break the right way for humankind, where a variant becomes dominant that spreads quickly but has mild effects. Evolution points that way, because no organism "wants" to kill its host environment (except, apparently, humans) for obvious reasons. But a more virulent variant could also emerge. I don't think forecasters can know what will happens, especially with the creation of variants more than just likely -- it's dead certain.
