You can't draw direct parallels between smallpox, polio, or a bacterial infection like tetanus and Covid. Even the flu is a little tenuous.
The rub is this virus has much more capacity for lethality, and can get there if people refuse to take the proper steps. You neglect to mention the hosts the 1918+ pandemic removed from the potential host pool. Covid will do the same, given the chance.
