There will be no herd immunity anytime soon. You're reading into that phrase "human"... this has crossed several species and is in both domesticated and wild animals by now. You can vaccinate all the people you want and reservoirs will still exist, hence "virus on Earth" and not "virus in humans."
This is why we need a therapeutic that takes death off the table... It will be years of playing whack a mole to try to stay ahead of variants and vaccinate, if places like the US refuse to take adequate steps at containment.
All the "woke patriots" are dismissing it with a "low % death rate," variants in CA and NYC are beginning to take hold. Once they're dominant, odds are high the mortality will start to rachet up, and resistance/ prior immunity drop. We'll see how long the "just a flu" crowd can cling to that illusion.
