The vaccine negativity / fear-mongering were talking about effectiveness after the first dose. Pfizer/Biontech showed the infection curves veering apart at around 11 days after the first dose.

Now we just have to hope enough people get vaccinated quickly enough such that the virus doesn't mutate away from protection, and that the immunity (antibodies and T-cells) provides long lasting protection without any long term safety issues.
