They freely admit that this protein has been known, the difference is they cloned 19,000 transformed cells and tested infectivity potential, and TMEM41B, was the only cell line with resistance, and it is a naturally occurring mutation in Asia. This could potentially explain the lower case loads in those countries.
As the mechanism is elucidated they proposed that existing drugs could be repurposed.
