It's worse than that. Giving people azithromycin along with the anti-malarials is crazy. The drug interaction can cause a fatal arrhythmia. You're giving something that can cause a fatal heart attack, to people who are already so sick that they're in the ICU?

There's no evidence that the azithromycin is actually helpful. To me it's crazy to START with the two drugs together -- it would seem to make more sense to use the anti-malarial, and then if it isn't helping, that would be the time to take the chance of adding an antibiotic.
