What is also interesting to me about ARDS is that it seems more common but is not specific to this virus. The flu killed 80k in 2017-2018 and routinely about 30-50 k annually. Are most of these deaths also due to ARDS? Also, only about 20% of flu tests come back positive, so we don't definitively know what virus killed most of these people.
My back of the envelope stats show that we have about 140k fatal heart attacks, and about 70k drug overdoses annually.
How does an average of 50k dying annually not cause us to aggressively try to find better ARDS treatments years ago. Look how many anti immune drugs including Humira we successfully use for less fatal diseases and spend billions on.
