One the problems I see is, it makes it nearly impossible for small public companies to succeed. Shorting the hell out of a stock forces companies to take bad funding deals (i.e. toxic) and creates a death spiral.
As an example, how many biotech companies are out there that could really benefit society but the dice are loaded so they can't win.
Who knows, maybe there would have been more cures for cancer or even vaccines for viruses over the last many years this has been going on.
For the companies that didn't go out of business, it sure does slow them down.
