This came to humans suddenly , I think sometimes around 1978 ,
and no one knew what it is for few years ..after couple of years it was know that it is a virus , but only little after 1984 blood test for HIV was developed ...

For few years before test , in the NYC hospitals ( And some other places ) , there were patients receiving blood transfusion for different reasons , but no HIV test was available at this time , but some infected patients already ..
Few years after that , when test became available , all those patients had HIV test done , and some became positive due to blood transfusion ..
there was a lot of panic at this time ...since no treatment yet available ...

Fortunately , we are long way already since this time ..
