i am almost 99% sure Gerald is trying to voluntarily step down as soon as he can find a reasonable situation. His family situation is strained to say the least. he's gotten the ball rolling and all the shares he needs to be sure to benefit from others successes. and if he had just stepped down before he got things going here, everything would've been stolen and he would've felt like an asshat the rest of his life. In the same vein, I think he recognized he was outmatched long ago. it just wouldn't have done anyone any good to quit.
