Hawk, I agree with you. QMC scientists are very capable of working with all sorts of advanced materials and mediums to insert them into. They have the resumes for that, and you can search their thesis to find more details. The couple or so times I visited San Marcos I was always impressed. Dr Jabbour is on a level all his own, IMO. I think that is more specific to your point.
Encapsulating may not be two separate processes. I am not sure. All QD manufacturers have as a goal to reduce or eliminate barrier layers.
QD are mixed with polymers or other similar liquid state materials to functionalize the QD for almost all display and SSL purposes. For displays, historically a barrier layer or two is/was used to encapsulate the QD/polymer layer. For QD-LED, QMC said in the PR that the QD were encapsulated. I do not know if this means there was a clear barrier layer film on top of the QD layer or if it means the QD were mixed with a polymer and that could be called 'encapsulated'; as the film itself mixes with the QD. The reason I am not sure is because QMC makes environmentally resistant QD that would possibly not require a barrier layer for encapsulating, and therefore reduce display manufacturing costs considerably. If the 7000 hour QD-LED is the latter type, it would reduce LED costs considerably. In that case, as the polymers completely envelop the QD, we could say that the polymers of the film 'encapsulate' them, As a byproduct of QMC QD, it is also an example why QMC would want to be paid relative to the value created in the end product (in this case cost savings of no barrier layer) rather than the flat value of the QD in the general market.
