So what's wrong with that? The market maker was working the stock to get the best price for the guy who wanted to buy. He was then able to get out of his position for a profit and provided a liquid market to the guy in the afternoon that wanted to sell his shares.
Seems like a functional market place where the MM provides liquidity and takes a bit of risk for a bit of profit.
