understandable concern that used to trip me up too.
to simplify, not enough manf expressing itself when needed leads to stuff like unfolded protein response, which then creates inflammation and stress, which then leads to lots of ineffective MANF release.
by your (and at one time my logic) , you could say that white blood cells are bad because you will have more of them attacking an infection or a virus. the white blood cells are irrefutably good when there's enough of them in the right place doing the right thing at the right time.
that's a super simplified and over generalized argument that doesn't just apply to diabetes/manf mechansms
