the display industry doesn't move too fast. Once they decide a path, they have to build Fabs, get on the waiting list to buy special machinery and such. Most important, they preplan the lifetime and production needed to make multi-billion investments pay off.
If the path is LCD TO LED TO MICROLED then they will wring the money out of each advance before moving to the next one.
However, Apple does seem to be making moves to MICROLED and it is possible that small smartphone screens could be the first MICROLED products because Apple needs new screen makers to escape Samsung dependancy.
