Anesthesia in and of itself carries risks. I will never have a colonoscopy again, after having one with the maximum dose of pain meds and anesthetic, and still it was incredibly painful. I totally do not blame the patient for not wanting to do the procedure. We don't know what kind of bad effects the first procedure had, and only a fool would consent to another one if the first one (before the clinical trial) was a very bad experience.
There is now a company called, I think. ColoGuard, in Wisconsin, that does DNA testing on samples to see if there are any markers for colon cancer cells. It costs about 600 bucks retail price, but many health insurance companies cover it because it's actually CHEAPER than a colonoscopy. Non-invasive, and a friend who did it says it's really easy. They send a kit that is evidently designed to make the, um, collection of the sample as easy and non-disgusting as possible.
Of course, if you test positive, then you do have to have a colonoscopy.
