I'm all for 'untethering' health insurance from employment and for single payer as well, though I suspect most of your projected surplus is unrealistic.
No, we're not self-sufficient. Our domestic market is not enough to create and sustain a growing economy in a world of 7-8 billion people.
In order to maintain the ACA reforms most people like, no exclusion for pre-existing conditions and no limits on lifetime coverage, health insurance companies will still be needed to manage risk.
And they'll continue to be needed to offer supplemental coverage that single payer will not be able to afford to cover, at least immediately.
If I'm wrong, fine. Let the health insurance companies compete with GEICO and Met Life for home, auto, property and life.
