A lot of possibilities. Moving huge amounts of data between server farms would most certainly cause a lot of problems in regards to view-ability and stability. The existing network probably couldn't have handled it. IMO
Maybe better to take the servers down than to present the customer with service interruptions that would have most certainly have occurred during the process.
I'd be pissed if my service would intermittently go down or get jittery while I was watching a move I payed for.
A pre-announcement to the customer base might have been a prudent move however.
