That is a sound argument. It's a secular version of Pascal's Wager.

Build and deploy the alternate energy equipment and infrastructure as though the planet's future depended upon it.
If it does, we have a chance to alter or mitigate a disastrous trend.
if wrong, we still would have a better economy, and a cleaner environment, for being the supplier and the consumer of cheaper and cleaner energy.
