Doctors prescribe stuff off label all the time. Some doctors are already prescribing Metformin for cancer patients (it's a diabetes drug) because some preliminary epidemiological studies have shown that it slows tumor growth. (The theory is that it disrupts the glucose mechanism that tumors need for growth.)
