The stock market crashed on October 24th, 1929. On that day, the NYSE opened up the trading day 11% less than the previous day's close. It last until the market bottomed in 1932.
As the historical data below shows, at no point was the NYSE left with only 200 issues trading. Matter of fact, there wasn't the mass-exit of publicly held companies you describe at all.
