That's funny you say a pilot knowing anything about a maintenance issue is laughed at. My neighbor is a pilot and an AMT, hell I'm a pilot and the systems and errors from them failing have been on my FAA knowledge exams all the way back to private pilot.
Pilots may not work on planes or understand finer details of select component's but not only do they usually understand basic maintenance issue, it is required.
Not to many pilots can have system failures at cruise and say oh lets just call a mechanic they can run up here and land it. I think the only thing that might be laughed at more is a mechanic that thinks they are a pilot cause they overhauled an engine.
